(The effects are tremendously polished for something that won't air for at least three or four months.) Whatever the case, it looks as though they've nailed the harrowing tone and havoc freneticism of some of the game's key set-pieces. The video game in itself was known for its cinematic quality, and an abundance of inspiration has clearly been taken from some of the cut scenes, verging on shot-for-shot in certain teased sequences.Īccording to reports from sources from inside the show, the budget could be upwards of $15 million an episode, and going by the fact that there'll apparently be a full-on plane crash in that harrowing prologue, they've really spared no expense. While the first teaser footage, dropped as part of HBO's future-facing slate preview in August, pointedly avoided some of the biological nasties of the series (read: cordyceps, clickers, and other parasitic monsters beginning with “c") this gives us our first look at some of the creeping foes Joel and Ellie will face off against. Subtle fan service is the best fan service.) (Also note: the song's silly, but it plays a big part in The Last of Us: Part II. Sure, the slow and epic A-ha remix verges a little too close to parodic, but it's an otherwise exciting new tease for what will hopefully be one of the best TV shows of 2023. But then, importantly, there are the moments of beauty - and levity - which made the game such a rare tonal tonic in the first place: fans will be familiar with Ellie's photobooth moment with Riley, which we see midway through the trailer, and some of those landscape shots are very pretty indeed. It looks pretty tremendous, all told, not least for a video game adaptation, with gorgeously dystopian set work really selling The Last of Us's mood of unrelenting shitiness. Joel, then, is tasked with taking her to the Fireflies, an enigmatic Utah-based group who want to use Ellie's unique immunity to synthesise a cure. Ellie is immune to the Cordyceps plague that has all but destroyed civilisation, rendering her the last, best hope for a humanity. The trailer makes it clear that this is, for the most part, the story we're all too familiar with.
